The FamilyGetaway.com Survey Results Are In and… There is a New Definition of Family Travel

New Survey Reveals a New Nuclear Family with an Appetite for Luxury Travel on a Budget

Family Getaway, the leading provider of upscale family-friendly hotel stays and family vacations, today released findings from a recent customer survey of more than 2,000 respondents analyzing travel patterns, including frequency of travel, favorite destinations, and choice of travel companions. Results show that the “family of four” no longer refers to the traditional nuclear family with two adults and two young children. Instead, many respondents define their family as four or more adults – whether that is families with adult children, or close circles of friends who consider themselves “family.”

82% of respondents said they travel with immediate family, but more than 50% of respondents’ children were over the age of 18. With 15% of those queried indicating that kid-friendly activities and destinations are something they consider to be most important when traveling with family, it is clear that vacationers’ priorities go beyond accommodating young children.

“I recently booked my first trip to Las Vegas on Family Getaway,” stated Codie Brooks, a 27-year-old film industry professional in Los Angeles. “I’m a Los Angeles resident, and do not have any immediate family living in the city so I consider my best friends in LA my family. We wanted a ‘girlfriends getaway’ and Family Getaway offered an incredible vacation package that could accommodate the four of us – all adults. It was a welcome surprise that I found such an amazing deal on a perfect hotel for my friends on a site geared towards families.”

Additional survey findings show that budget is a top consideration when planning “family” travel, along with value-added incentives. As vacationers redefine “family travel,” they are saving money as a result. 79% of respondents’ main challenge in traveling was keeping cost down; however, with travelers dividing the cost by four, the challenge of cost and affordability is now becoming much less of a setback. Four adults, two couples, golf getaways, whatever the case - redefining “family” allows travelers to say bon voyage at a quarter of the price of a solo traveler. Finding the extra funds to travel may be a stretch in these difficult financial times; however, this inventive solution is making travel a reality with 48% of respondents traveling the same amount this year as they did last year.

In addition to offering more affordable options for three-, four- and five-star travel, FamilyGetaway.com satisfies customers’ cravings for competitive pricing and a wide variety of desirable and relaxing destinations – and the proof is in the survey. Out of 2,064 respondents, pool and beach-based vacations were the top types of vacations that best described respondents’ dream family vacations. When asked to choose what respondents liked most about the FamilyGetaway.com:

  • 56% of respondents liked the prices on hotel packages
